The Structure and Craft of Cigar Rolling

Every elegant cigar is the result of a delicate blend of skill and artistry. Cigar rollers dedicate immense effort, time, and passion to the craft, treating cigar rolling as more than just a job. It is an art form that requires absolute dedication to achieve the ideal shape, flavour, and smooth draw. Let’s take a closer look at the structure and the rolling process of a hand-rolled cigar.

The Three Key Components of a Cigar

A hand-rolled cigar consists of three main parts: the filler, the binder, and the wrapper.

  • Wrapper: The wrapper leaf largely determines the cigar’s appearance and aroma. Selected for its smooth, veinless texture, it undergoes a separate fermentation process to ensure softness and avoid excess oiliness, giving the cigar its outer beauty and distinct fragrance.

  • Binder: This leaf encases the filler tightly, creating a firm structure for the cigar. Typically made from the upper leaves of the tobacco plant, which are tougher and more resilient due to sun exposure, the binder ensures that the filler is tightly secured.

  • Filler: Located at the core, the filler usually consists of three types of tobacco leaves rolled together in a way that ensures a smooth draw. The innermost leaves, with high oil content, provide a slow burn. Medium leaves from the plant’s midsection add balance, while the bottom leaves, though mild in flavour, burn consistently, ensuring an even smoking experience.

The ratios of these leaves and their origin give each cigar its unique flavour profile. Blending different leaves from various regions or vintages allows cigar brands to create consistent flavours across their collections, with each ring gauge and size further influencing the cigar’s taste.

The Rolling Process

Once the wrapper, binder, and filler leaves are selected, the rolling process begins. The wrapper leaf is carefully flattened and positioned so that the veins face inward. The filler leaves, arranged in 2-4 leaves, are rolled inside the binder, forming the cigar’s core. This bundle, or “cigar embryo,” is then shaped and placed onto the wrapper at a precise angle. The wrapper is carefully rolled around the core, sealed with tasteless, natural vegetable glue.

Finally, the cigar is topped with a small cap, which secures the wrapper at the head.
